Your session should be all about you and your family! It should capture your unique personalities. Here’s what you can expect when you book a session with me…Fun! By this I mean….I want you to relax and really enjoy spending this precious time with your kiddos; away from all the calls of duty and away from everything else that beckons your daily attention. These times are few and far between, so take advantage, relax and have fun!

Say Cheese!

Just kidding, please don’t. This word tends to evoke a very forced and unnatural smile from your child instead of a genuine expression. I like to “create” smiles rather than ask for them. Please don’t over prepare your child for your session. Doing this could create pressure for them to perform and might ultimately backfire on us. Remember….the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed and willing your child will be.

Your shoes might come off!

Sometimes, there may be a little bit of a walk/hike involved in getting to a location. Bring a pair of comfy shoes in addition to what you’ll be wearing for the actual session. If we’re shooting at the beach, plan on taking your shoes off. You might even get a bit wet if we decide to have a splashing war 🙂 Bring a towel and/or some dry clothes for the little ones. Don’t worry about splashes on your clothing…..we are, after all, at the beach. I am fully equipped with PhotoShop!

Dress the part.

Please don’t stress over what to wear. Here are some helpful tips: Wear something you like, look good in and are comfortable in. What do you envision when you think of your family portrait? If you think of soft dreamy light and colors, then maybe you stick with tan, light grey, oatmeal or slate grey. If you are a spunky and energetic family, you might want to wear bright crisp colors. Don’t forget some fun accents like hair bands, scarfs and hats. Remember, the whole family does not have to match, in fact, I prefer you not to match. Just coordinate like you would coordinate pillows for your couch. If you want, feel free to send me pictures of your wardrobe choices. I’ll let you know what I think 🙂

Don't be a cry baby!

Every child is different and like adults, children have bad days. I’m sure this is not news to you….

I specialize in getting children to have fun and be happy when we shoot. Don’t over direct your child during our session……in other words, please don’t tell your child where to sit and how to smile. I feel that when parents do this, the child tends to crawl back into their shell because they don’t want to upset Mommy or Daddy 🙁 We want your child to be filled with endless smiles and laughter!

I will take care of the directing…….this is part of what you are paying me for. If I need some help from Mom or Dad (and sometimes I do) I will ask you 🙂

My goal is for this to be an enjoyable experience for you and your children. If I’ve done my job right, the end product will render candid and fun family images!

One more thing… Dads… please, please be a happy participant in your family photo session. I know family portraits are not your favorite activity but these pictures are gifts that you leave for your children when you are gone. They are so important, please give this time to your family. Your wife will be so happy when she receives her pictures!
